Charter Communications, which just more than a year ago emerged from bankruptcy, is taking a different direction with its set-top box and OTT strategy, enlisting TiVo to provide its new Premiere DVR as the MSO's STB of choice. The box, which was launched to mixed reviews last year, will be at the core of Charter's multiroom/whole house strategy.

How worrisome is "The Netflix Phenomenon" to pay-TV providers? There's a lot of noise in the space about how content providers have learned their collective lessons and will never allow the video delivery service to have "cheap content" again. As a whole, most have publicly adopted the "we'll make them pay next time" stance of folks like Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes, who has said he'll make sure the Starz content he sells Netflix next time will have a more appropriate price tag. Ditto HBO and the rest of TW's stable of programming.

Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHTR) and TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), today announced that Charter is setting its strategy for the next generation of television into motion with TiVo Inc. Charter and TiVo have finalized a multi-year agreement that will leverage the TiVo user interface to bring a new and enhanced entertainment experience to customers using a hybrid platform that leverages traditional cable and next generation IP technologies. Through this agreement, Charter is making a significant commitment to deploy the TiVo service to enable an enhanced television experience for consumers.

3D TV is not – yet – delivering on its promise, according to a report from Screen Digest. “3D TV set shipments for 2010 will be 3.3 million units globally – a far cry from the 6 million-7 million expected based on projections from just four of the largest companies (LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony),” says SD. Indeed, Screen Digest says if you consolidate anticipated 3D-TV shipments from the overall trade generally then numbers of between 7.5 million to a staggering 20 million were expected for 2010.
