Well after my post the other day about the distinct absence of a TV service launch from Orange, it seems
that they have come clean and basically delayed the service. However the reasons pushed seem to not be very sensible except for the issue of pushing a new service in the midst of a recession. The main reason being pushed around is that the service is ‘too similar’ to the BT Vision service.. hmmm, similar like it is a Freeview based Broadcast box with value add Video on Demand features. If that was true then Orange should shut up shop as it provides pretty much the same mobile phone service as Vodafone, O2 etc.
From my perspective it would seem to be more to do with the fact that BT Vision (along with the fuller Broadband service that is Tiscali TV) does not have stratospheric growth in the market dominated by BSkyB and Freeview itself, and this is not much to compete over – for this read spend more money than you receive – whilst the UK, and the world generally, go through the current financial adjustment.
The reports also however do not reveal if there are other technical reasons behind why this service has been in development such a very long time.
