OLPC and Windows XP: If you cannot beat them, join them

The news that Negroponte’s OLPC has finally delivered on Windows XP should give the product a boost although I have my doubts about the performance that can be expected on such a low powered machine. After all, the EeePC offers a faster processor with more RAM and more storage as well and it suffers a little from being under powered whilst running XP. I can agree with many sentiments that say that this is a last gasp for the project to make it popular.

What is unfortunate about the Linux implementation variant is that it is just too different from what anyone expects as a computer – even in the 3rd World. Windows XP gives the machine that standard looking UI.

One thing Asus got right on the EeePC Linux variant is that the user interface is simple to use but can be altered very quickly to operate in an advanced mode that looks like a traditional user interface. We just hope that the extra performance demands of Windows on the OLPC does not kill it.
